{"id":155660,"date":"2021-11-04T12:48:13","date_gmt":"2021-11-04T12:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/?p=155660"},"modified":"2024-12-13T13:44:28","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T13:44:28","slug":"global-encryption-day-a-worldwide-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/blog\/2021\/11\/global-encryption-day-a-worldwide-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Encryption Day \u2013 A Worldwide Success!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The first ever <a href=\"https:\/\/ged.globalencryption.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Encryption Day<\/a> was held on 21 October 2021 and was an outstanding success!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalencryption.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Encryption Coalition (GEC<\/a>), Global Encryption Day brought people together around the world to champion strong encryption and to deliver the message to governments that weakening encryption puts people, communities, and entire nations at risk.\u00a0On Global Encryption Day:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>More than <a href=\"https:\/\/ged.globalencryption.org\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">70 events were held worldwide<\/a>, with over half of them hosted by Internet Society <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/chapters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">c<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/chapters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hapters<\/a>.<\/li><li>168 organizations signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/ged.globalencryption.org\/statement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Encryption Day Statement<\/a> calling on governments and the private sector to reject efforts to undermine encryption and instead pursue policies that enhance, strengthen, and promote use of strong encryption to protect people everywhere.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/ged.globalencryption.org\/testimonials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9 companies provided testimonials<\/a> on why they\u2019re proud to offer end-to-end encrypted services to their customers.<\/li><li>Over 2.4 million unique visitors visited the <a href=\"https:\/\/ged.globalencryption.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Make the Switch campaign website<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/whoslistening.globalencryption.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Who&#8217;s Listening<\/a> game.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/game-giphy.gif\" alt=\"scenes from the global encryption day game\" class=\"wp-image-152799\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Thousands of people watched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KrYvzIfY8_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Encryption Day Press Conference<\/a>. GEC Members Article 19, Mozilla, and Tutanota joined Edward Snowden, Board Member of Freedom of the Press Foundation, and other leading advocates of online freedom and civil society groups to launch Global Encryption Day and call on governments to stop undermining encryption. We rely on our communities to help us advocate for strong encryption in parts of the world where it is at risk of being undermined. We still need your help to continue the work to educate and inform everyone that encryption is a key foundation of a strong and trustworthy Internet.
