One of the visitors from the nearby town smiles at the sight, deciding to try a small clementine. \u201cVery sweet,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the first harvests of organic produce grown in Puesto Garc\u00eda, thanks to information farmers discovered using their new Internet connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI learned a lot, and I still want to learn much more,\u201d said Elizabeth Pacheco, one of the women behind the endeavor. \u201cI set myself a goal to grow organic crops, and I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer uag-hide-mob\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:6%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column uag-hide-mob is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:7%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:94%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 60%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer uag-hide-desktop uag-hide-tab\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Puesto Garc\u00eda is a village of approximately 700 people. Although few in numbers, they are responsible for growing crops that feed hundreds of people in nearby towns, with their distribution network extending all the way to parts of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia\u2019s largest city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have identified a new market of people seeking to eat healthier with less environmental impact, and organic produce is their biggest asset. But it\u2019s not always easy to go organic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe planted potatoes, but we tried and tried, and they wouldn\u2019t grow properly. A friend of mine also had the same issue with her crops, so I told her, \u2018Let\u2019s go to the NANUM center and do research,\u2019\u201d said Elizabeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-depth-green-color has-text-color has-link-color has-26-font-size wp-elements-be3bef3115d389742a22b3ca8eec85ed\">The NANUM Center in Puesto Garc\u00eda is one of the connectivity hubs developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/mujeresnanum.org\/\">NANUM Mujeres Conectadas<\/a> (NANUM Connected Women) initiative in the Gran Chaco region of South America. It\u2019s home to several Indigenous peoples, like the Guaran\u00ed, the Toba, and the Wenhayek peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some urban areas in the Chaco have Internet connectivity, others just a few kilometers away are left behind. It is expensive to build the infrastructure, and many Internet service providers (ISPs) do not make enough profit to justify the investment, so they avoid connecting these areas entirely. As a result, entire populations are cut off from the opportunities the Internet brings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the ever\u2014growing digital divide between rural areas and urban, agrarian communities in the Gran Chaco are also threatened by climate change, ongoing land\u2014grabbing, and deforestation. Familiar with sustainability issues and Indigenous communities in South America, organizations like Fundaci\u00f3n Avina and Nativa joined forces with other non\u2014profit organizations, local enterprises, and global businesses to start the project in 2020. They started by building Internet and training centers\u2014called NANUM Centers\u2014in areas with patchy connectivity. Still, a lack of equipment and local infrastructure hindered a fast and reliable service. Women could attend these centers to learn digital, business, and content development skills and receive local journalism training. The new partnership brought more technical expertise through local chapters and additional funding. It led the team to realize they could build infrastructure connecting more than one community at a time\u2014with the right approach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the Internet Society\u2019s initial funding for the deployment, the project team worked with the Internet Society Bolivia and Paraguay Chapters to extend Internet access to more remote communities, like Santa Rosa in Paraguay and Puesto Garc\u00eda in Bolivia. With social media, we can reach other parts of the district, and even other countries, with our handicraft and produce. It\u2019s not about selling, but also learning about the market. Sometimes, we needed to travel to markets to see how much they were charging for produce. For the local women who work in crafting, \u201cConnectivity [not only brought] the opportunity [to trade] their products with other communities but also helped them develop digital and financial skills,\u201d says Mariana Franco, a project manager for the NANUM project in Paraguay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After working with these two communities, further expansions helped them reach others like Chimeo and Tahiguati, where women sell fabric, artwork, and even locally made cosmetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, the partnership has already connected over 5,000 people to the Internet. And they don\u2019t want to stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-depth-green-color has-text-color has-link-color has-26-font-size wp-elements-3b4f980b570e38d3570828a22e2b6a0f\">\u201cWe plan to reach more communities and Indigenous peoples of the Chaco in the coming years,\u201d says Marcela.
