In 2002, the Internet Society created\u00a0the Public Interest Registry (PIR)<\/a>, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation to manage, enhance, and expand the .org domain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, over 11 million domains are registered under .ORG, and PIR has expanded to also operate the domains .NGO, .ONG, .CHARITY, .FOUNDATION, .GIVES, and .GIVING. Additionally, PIR operates three internationalized domain names: Devenagari .\u0938\u0902\u0917\u0920\u0928; Russian Cyrillic .OP\u0413; and simplified Chinese .\u673a\u6784. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

PIR\u2019s activities also provide funding for the Internet Society and the Internet Society Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
